2020 Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service: Schedule of Events
NOTE: Please note schedule is subject to change. Last updated: September 3, 2020
We do ask that you RSVP for a service project (feel free to RSVP for more than 1) so we can track where our service and outreach is taking place. Due to the virtual nature of this year’s Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service, there are no designated times for you to engage in your service project unless otherwise indicated. We encourage participants to engage in service on September 11th – September 13th. If you would like to participate in our Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service Social Media Campaign to track our service, please use #masongivesback when posting and sharing photos.
9:00am-9:30am: Morning Mindfulness and Meditation led by local military veteran Ben King with Armor Down
Join Armor Down Founder and President Ben King as he guides us through a mindfulness meditation practice called 10 Bells on September 11th at 9:00am via Zoom. With each sounding of the bell Ben will guide us through moment-by-moment awareness of our surrounding environment, bodily sensations, and our breath. With each moment of greater presence Ben will encourage us to armor down and open our hearts in gratitude for those who have served and sacrificed so much from and through the years following September 11th.
12:00pm-12:45pm: Welcome and Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service Opening Ceremonies
Join us for Mason’s 9/11 Day of Service Opening Ceremony to recognize the sacrifices made by first responders, to commemorate the lives lost during the tragedies on September 11th, 2001, and to kick off this year’s service projects. We will hear from a number of guest speakers to include Vice President of University Life, Rose Pascarell and Provost, Dr. Mark Ginsburg. We will also honor John Wood, owner of 29 Diner, for his work supporting veterans through his Feed A Vet, Save A Vet program and will hear performances by the Hylton Performing Arts Center’s Veterans and the Arts Initiative, as well as from our very own Doc Nix and the Green Machine. We are also excited to recognize one our key partners for the past 8 years, Van Metre. Zoom Webinar Link: http://go.gmu.edu/911Service.
